For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
"For the word of God is alive and active..." I love that.
When I was a fairly new Christian, I would see the 'popular preachers' on the tv, hear about their daily routine or whatever and try to mimic it, thinking, "This is what it is to be a Christian," and "this is what I have to do in order to do right by God," and other such things... At one time, upon hearing of one preacher's morning routine, I tried ever so hard to do the same: 'up at 4, pray, Bible reading, etc...' - and that with a new hubby, family, and baby - until God placed on my heart, "You cannot live by somebody else's revelation."
When God speaks to you, there is a quickening in your spirit, or in your heart, where you know that you know that you know that 'statement' or thought never came from you, but from Him. Depending on what is said, be it to do with an answer to prayer - or to a question you've asked, something relating your past, present, or future, if it is of God there is either relief, peace, hope, joy, an encouragement of faith, a deeper awareness of love, or something equally as grand that comes with it. Even a conviction will set free and lighten your burden. And when it is given, it feels as though is has penetrated 'even to dividing soul and spirit,' and it is your personal revelation from God - a whisper from His heart to yours, and it leaves you trusting Him a little more.
What I love about God's word, be it through revelation while in thought, while reading the Bible, or however it is received, if it is quickened to your heart, it has come to life for you; it is working for you. Others may not understand it at first, others may not be ready to wear it or live it, but there will be someone out there who will understand where you're coming from, and, more importantly, the word you receive will be working to set you free in one way or another. The trick is to let the Holy Spirit have His way in your heart, so the word that takes root in your soul will grow and produce fruit. Many of us simply run off and expect everyone else to immediately live by our revelation and lose faith in it when they don't.
You will witness such a thing for yourself over time. You can read a passage of the Bible over and over and not get anything out of it, then, suddenly, you happen upon that same passage again and 'WHAM!' it hits you in a new way; revelation is given; the word comes to life for you; your heart quickens, you have an urge to laugh, cry or yahoo with excitement, knowing the Holy Spirit has just revealed something very important for your life, to you.
There are times you may pick up the Bible, see another believer, hear a message from the pulpit that makes you feel like you have to work to get into God's books, and you may try to do what is asked of you, but it may seem like a lot of hard work. If the revelation or the work you feel you need to do does not come easily, you best go back and check that the word has come to life in your heart, and is working for you, with at least one positive emotion with it, rather than become a burden.
Again, you can read a passage of the Bible over and over, but until the Holy Spirit quickens it to your heart, it's yet to come to life and produce fruit for you.
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? ~*~*~*~
When God plants His word in you, in your heart, it takes root and goes on to produce fruit in your life. A transformation takes place. The light goes on, and the burden is less, the joy is greater, the peace is easier to hold onto, faith is more tangible, and so on. His word comes to life in you, it brings life with it, and it transforms your life for the better.
1 Peter 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
You don't have to strive to make God's word work in your life; you just have to be open to it and He'll produce life - as He does. However,
"Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account."
you are responsible for what He has given you... but remember, you are responsible for it;
